The 1989 Revolution and Transformation in Slovak Public-Service Radio PDF

ABSTRACT: Media, newsrooms and journalists themselves changed dramatically after 1989 in Czechoslovakia. The media policy of the communist regime was replaced by the media policy of an emerging democracy. This study is an attempt to understand how this radical change of political regime and the relationship between media and power has affected the national, public service broadcaster Slovak Radio [Slovenský rozhlas]. This study is a description of the events of the 1989 Revolution in the Czechoslovak Radio in Slovakia and its immediate aftermath. It focuses on the news, because the process of news-making changed radically, including major personal changes. Qualitative in-depth interviews with five leading personalities from the public service radio broadcaster, who played an important part in these changes, describe the revolution from the Slovak Radio employees’ point of view and demonstrate the practical impact of the transformation on everyday work in media during the revolution and transformation. As the research is methodologically based on oral history, the respondents describe the most important processes in newsrooms during the change of regime, as well as the most important impact of this paradigmatic change in the Slovak Radio.

Mediální reprezentace zásahu v pražských mešitách a její reflexe muslimy žijícími v ČR PDF
// Media Representation of the Intervention in Prague Mosques and the Response by Muslims Living in the Czech Republic

ABSTRACT: This paper combines two research topics. The first one is an analysis of media representation of the police intervention in Prague mosques on 25 April 2014. Articles published on the online servers Aktualne.cz, denik.cz, iDnes.cz, IhNED.cz, Lidovky.cz, novinky.cz and in the printed newspapers MF Dnes, Právo, Lidové Noviny, hospodářské noviny from April 2014 to December 2014 were analysed in terms of a content analysis and interpretative reading with the goal of determining the key frames in which media referred to the event. The second one focuses on the responses of a specific social group, Muslims living in the Czech Republic, to the media representation of this event. Data collected in half-structured interviews revealed that the majority of the informants perceived it as too shallow which conformed with the official explanation of the event by state representatives. In accordance with hall’s categorization, one can speak of an oppositional reading. The study reveals the stigmatization of Muslims living in the Czech Republic by the media framing of the event.

Zkorumpovaná pakáž: eristika vybraných fragmentů současného demagogického diskursu PDF
// Corrupted Scum: Eristics of Selected Fragments of Contemporary Demagogic Discourse

ABSTRACT: Presented theoretical essay draws on perspectives of critical theory of media (J. Habermas, T. W. Adorno) and social philosophy (S. Žižek) with an emphasize on the ethical dimension of communicative action. The aim of the text is to address – through the prism of critical theory of argumentation (D. Walton) – selected rhetorical strategies of the contemporary Czech political discourse, which gains its persuasive power and common figures from the matrices of so called Ur-fascism (U. Eco).
