Should we Consider Local Newspaper Chains Local Media? Development of the Local Press Chain in the Czech Republic PDF

ABSTRACT: Local press, even if it is part of a publishing chain, is understood as a local medium. It is assumed that local press titles within such chains would similarly display an organizational structure typical to local media production. However, serious concerns remain as to just how local these operations are in light of trends towards organizational news consolidation. This paper seeks to clarify these concerns through a mixed-method analysis of the development of the dominant local press chain Vltava-Labe-Press in the Czech Republic between 1989 and 2009. This manuscript considers how this particular media organization has in this period addressed economic change, and the extent to which the focus of its content can actually be defined as local. The VLP chain’s local development is traced qualitatively using document analysis and interviews. Content changes were analysed quantitatively. The research findings suggest that there is little distinction between local press chain titles and national newspapers..

Factors Promoting or Preventing and Relieving the Burnout of Newspaper Sports Journalists during a Prolonged Strenuous Period: Case Study of Estonian Sports Journalists during the Rio 2016 Summer Games PDF

ABSTRACT: The aim of this article is to find out what the work demands and resources of Estonian newspaper sport journalists were during the Games and how they affeected them. This article examines the possible burnout elements in sports journalists‘ work through the lens of Job Demands and Resources model and Conservation of Resources Theory. During the research period, seven journalists in two newspaper newsrooms were observed for two days. In addition, interviews with eight journalists were carried out. Although it might be assumed that working abroad might be more stressful than staying in a familiar environment, it appears that the journalists who stayed in their homeland exhibited more components of stress during the Olympics when they had a couple of days off, while the journalists in Rio had none.

// Media Framing: a Theoretical and Methodological Definition in the Process of Political Communication

ABSTRACT: The aim of this article is to present the conceptual definition of the theory of media framing in political communication, the most important typologies of frames and relevant research methodology of its effects. Media framing is derived from the central role of the media in the communication process and it is an integral part of the media presentation of political events. Studying its effect on other players in the communication process (political leaders in all levels of democratic system and the public) seems to be needed. The paper also presents major challenges in the study of media framing and possible advice on how best to develop research in this area. The findings are drawn from an analysis of relevant academic studies abroad. The paper may provide a basic overview for other researchers who have decided to study the effect of media framing in the process of political communication, both on the local and national level of a democratic society.

// Fanspeak as an Example of Fan Activities with Power Potential

ABSTRACT: One of the most exemplar parts of media fandom is fans’ creative work (fan fiction). Some fans participate creatively; others just consume the work of the active ones. Fan fiction is linked to the original media products such as movies, television series, comics or books. Some aspects of this work are therefore borrowed. Fan fiction has its own rules of production and rating, it uses original and traditional narrative genres and its own language (fanspeak); its authorship alone is a very complex phenomenon. This paper introduces fanspeak as an active fan practice and shows how fans use their special language between themselves and in communication with producers. It postulates fanspeak as one of the examples of manifestoed power potential that fans hold. It also includes some examples of fanspeak as a part of possible commercial strategy which can be used by media producers.
